Importance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a province
The population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is 30.52 million. It has strategically importance for Pakistan due to the common border with Afghanistan. Its total area is 74,521 Square kilometers, which 9.36 % of Pakistan.
People and water provision
As the survey of PSLM 2014-15, approximately 81% of people have access to water from the hand pump, tap water, motorized pumps, and dug-wells. So 68.9% of the population of rural areas and urban population 93% has access to clean drinking water. This system of water delivery is based on self-provision 54%.
Is drinking water is pure or not?
Samples have taken from different areas show results as from 7 samples from Abbottabad 3 were safe while 4 were unsafe, Mangora 8 aware taken 5 were safe, from Mardan 50 50 % safe and unsafe and from Peshawar, 60 % samples showed safe water and 40% water was unsafe for human beings.
Water access for poor villagers
Specially the condition of villages is very pathetic due to the water crises in KPK. The poor women of villages have to travel some kilometers to get clean drinking water but they have no choice to get drinking water. In some areas a few wells are working on solar system.
Water level in KPK
Underground water level is going very low. A report shows that the level has dropped approximately 25 to 75 feet below. So to get water has become more expensive as well as more difficult.
Agriculture sector of KPK and water
Agriculture is based on water and agriculture is like a backbone for of Pakistan economy. Because it provides work to 40% labor and has 40% share in GDP of KPK.
KPK a "Land of Springs"
KPK is famous for the springs and called as a "Land of Springs". Now the main cities of KPK as Peshawar are facing the scarcity of clean drinking water due to increase the number of tube-wells installation. Which become the cause of the risk of water shortage .
The other source for water supply is pipe lines. But unfortunately pipelines are too old and not in good condition to supply water to KPK from Kabul River. There is a need of Rs 5 billion to provide clean and fresh drinking water from nearby Warsak Dam. Because of this costly supply, KPK has to suffer from shortage of clean drinking water due to the absence of funds.
Springs as a source of clean drinking water
The water of springs was in access before 60 years in KPK 's big cities and was a big source of clean water. But now the water level has become too much low and unable to satisfy the thirst of KPK. That crystal clear water was a blessing and was easy to get in the past but now it is a dream for the inhabitants of KPK.
Need for a policy
There is the need of the policy and planning to overcome the water issue in KPK. In 2016 the policy for the KPK drinking water was formulated, which has a little better impact on water supply.
Water crises and upcoming years
Geographical experts predicts about water scarcity that is alarming. According to some experts, next global issue will be clean drinking water till 2050. So the government should check and balance on provision and use of fresh clean water.
